This list of online resources for Wesleyan and Methodist studies is intended to be a beginning point for exploration, not an exhaustive compilation. The inclusion of a website here does not imply an endorsement of all the information contained in the site. Many of the websites listed here provide links to an even wider range of related sites. Access to the majority of these sites and resources is free, and exceptions are clearly noted.

Primary Sources

Christian Classics Ethereal Library

This site contains a digital library of hundreds of classic Christian books selected for edification and education. Electronic versions of older editions of many of the writings of John Wesley are available here, including his journal, sermons, notes on the OT and the NT, and poetical works. Access to most resources is free. Some versions (e.g., ePub versions) are available at modest prices.

Northwest Nazarene University, Wesley Center Online

In addition to older editions of Wesley’s sermons, letters, journal (incomplete),
and his notes on the OT and NT, this site provides access to A Christian Library (30 vols.), A Compendium of Natural Philosophy, A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, and a wide range of other resources. Access is free.

Dictionary of Methodism in Britain and Ireland

This online, searchable version of the Dictionary of Methodism in Britain and Ireland is an expanded version of the printed volume that was edited by J.A. Vickers and published by Epworth Press in 2003.

United Methodist Studies: Basic Bibliographies

This is a downloadable and searchable version of the 5th revised edition of this valuable work, compiled and edited by C.J. Anderson and K.E. Rowe.

Didache : Faithful Teaching

An open-access, interdisciplinary online academic journal that explores the intersections of Christian conviction, culture, and education for the Church of the Nazarene and other international Wesleyan communities in higher education. Sponsored by the International Board of Education of the Church of the Nazarene, in cooperation with Nazarene Theological Seminary.

Methodist History

The official, historical journal of The United Methodist Church. Since 1962, the year of its inception, it has published articles, book reviews, pictures and illustrations, news and other information about the history of the Wesleyan and Methodist heritage. Digital access is free and hard copy subscriptions are available.

Methodist Review: A Journal of Wesleyan and Methodist Studies

An open-access, peer-reviewed electronic journal that publishes scholarly articles in all areas and eras of Wesleyan and Methodist studies. Access is free, yet registration and login is required. This site also provides access to The Methodist Review Newsletter, a free quarterly electronic newsletter intended for all who are interested in the world of Wesleyan and Methodist scholarship.

Proceedings of the Wesley Historical Society [UK]

The content of vol. 1 (1897) through vol. 55 (2006) is now available online. Later volumes are available in hard copy individually or by subscription.

Quarterly Review: A Journal of Theological Resources for Ministry

Published jointly by The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church and The United Methodist Publishing House from 1980 through 2005.

Wesleyan Theological Journal

Published by the Wesleyan Theological Society. The content of vol. 1 (1966) through vol. 44/1 (2009) is now available online. Later volumes are available in hard copy individually or by subscription.

The American Methodism Project

Provides free access to a digitized collection of interdisciplinary and historical materials related to American Methodism. The project is a partnership between the United Methodist-related seminary libraries, the Internet Archive, the United Methodist Commission on Archives and History, and the Methodist Librarians Fellowship. Of particular
note is the digitized version of N.B. Harmon, ed., Encyclopedia of World Methodism.

Asbury Theological Seminary’s ePlace

Provides a digital collection of research and writing managed by the B.L. Fisher Library of Asbury Theological Seminary. Among the growing collection of materials available here are the publications of First Fruits Press, the free open-access academic press of Asbury Theological Seminary, including a PDF version of the most recent edition of K.J. Collins, ed., “A Wesley Bibliography.” A Word version of the bibliography is also available.

The Australasian Centre for Wesleyan Research

A working partnership formed by a number of Wesleyan theological institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand, the ACWR promotes and supports research on the life, work, and times of John and Charles Wesley, their historical and theological antecedents, their successors in the Wesleyan tradition, and contemporary scholarship in the Wesleyan tradition.

Duke Divinity School, Center for Studies in the Wesleyan Tradition

Provides a wide range of electronic resources, including online editions of John Wesley’s poetry and hymn collections, John Wesley’s undisputed verse, and Charles Wesley’s verse (now including all the surviving verse left in manuscript at his death). It also has an extensive list of links to other online resources and websites related to Wesleyan and Methodist Studies.

John Rylands University Library, Methodist Archives and Research Centre

Provides access to numerous electronic resources related to Wesleyan and Methodist Studies, especially through the Online Virtual Library.

Manchester Wesley Research Centre

Provides information about the programs and activities and access to scholarly papers produced by staff and associates of the MWRC, which promotes and supports research in the life and work of John and Charles Wesley, their contemporaries in the eighteenth century Evangelical Revival, their historical and theological antecedents, and contemporary scholarship in the Wesleyan and Evangelical tradition.

Northwest Nazarene University, Wesley Center Online

Provides a wide range of electronic resources, including digital versions of many of the works of John and Charles Wesley and numerous other works related to the Wesleyan and Holiness traditions. Of particular interest is the digital
archive of the Wesleyan Theological Journal from 1966 through 2009 (vol. 44/1).

Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History

Provides numerous resources for scholars working in Wesleyan and Methodist studies, including the Wesley Historical Society library and the Methodist Church Collection of Modern Christian Art.

UMC General Board of Higher Education and Ministry

Provides information about GBHEM activities and print publications and access to numerous electronic resources and documents produced by GBHEM. Of particular interest is the digital archive that makes available the entire run of Quarterly Review: A Journal of Theological Resources for Ministry, published jointly by GBHEM and The United
Methodist Publishing House from 1980 through 2005.

UMC General Board of Global Ministries: UM Key Information

Provides extensive list of links to organizations and agencies of the UMC, UM-related publications, and resources for UM history, doctrine, and theology. The section on “The Wesleys and Their Times” provides numerous works by and about Samuel, Susanna, John, and Charles Wesley in digital form, along with links to a large library of historical images.

UMC General Commission on Archives and History

Provides information about GCAH activities and publications and contains links to a wide variety of electronic resources related to Wesleyan and Methodist Studies. Of particular interest is the digital archive that makes available the archives of the journal Methodist History.

Charles Wesley Society

Provides information about CWS activities and publications, including its annual meeting, and offers a helpful list of links to other related resources.

Historical Society of The United Methodist Church

Provides information about the activities and publications of the society, including Methodist History, a quarterly journal of scholarly articles and book reviews on the history of the Methodist movement; and Historian’s Digest, a quarterly newsletter for society members.

Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies

Provides information about past and future meetings of the Oxford Institute, including online versions of many papers presented at sessions of the Institute since the first session in 1958.

The Society for the Study of Psychology and Wesleyan Theology

Provides information about the annual meetings and activities of the SSPWT.
